Commercial Dispute Preparation
Situation: A small financial investment company was facing a dispute over £500,000 in unpaid commission. The client had months of correspondence, invoices, and contracts but needed help organising everything before instructing a solicitor.
Response: I created a comprehensive chronological timeline of events, prepared indexed document bundles, and drafted structured summaries that clearly explained the commercial relationship and contractual obligations. I also participated in calls with the client and their solicitor to ensure legal and commercial understanding was maintained.
Outcome: The solicitor was able to work much more efficiently, as the case was already structured and documented. My client was confident and prepared throughout the process; The case is still ongoing.
Divorce Proceedings - Litigant in Person
Situation: An individual representing themselves in divorce proceedings needed to prepare financial disclosure statements and compile evidence for the court bundle. Somewhat overwhelmed by the technical requirements, emotional complexity and continual demands of the process.
Response: I helped structure financial disclosure, prepared clear narrative statements explaining their position, and organised exhibits according to court requirements. All work was designed to integrate smoothly with the court bundle being prepared by opposing counsel.
Outcome: The client has felt prepared and confident going into proceedings with professional, comprehensive documentation, helping them prepare as suggested by their Barrister, the final hearing is set for later in the year.
Tenancy Dispute Resolution
Situation: A tenant was facing eviction proceedings and needed to respond to their landlord's claims. The situation was complicated by disputed repairs and unclear lease terms.
Work Provided: I reviewed the tenancy agreement to identify key issues, helped draft measured correspondence that avoided escalation, and prepared a clear timeline of events with supporting evidence. The focus was on presenting the tenant's position professionally while maintaining the possibility of negotiation.
Outcome: The clear, structured approach led to productive negotiations between the parties. The dispute was resolved without court proceedings, saving both time and money for everyone involved.
Contract Review for Small Business
Situation: A two-person creative company was reviewing several incoming contracts from large potential clients. They needed help identifying practical and reputational risks they might have missed before signing.
Work Provided: I reviewed the contracts for clarity and coherence, highlighted potential issues with liability clauses and payment terms, and helped redraft certain sections to better protect the business. The work focused on practical commercial concerns rather than technical legal advice.
Outcome: The business was able to negotiate better terms on several contracts and avoid potential problems they hadn't spotted. They now have a clearer understanding of what to look for in future agreements.
Common Themes
These cases illustrate several key principles that guide the work:
Preparation can prevent escalation. When people feel organised and prepared, they're less likely to react emotionally or make decisions that complicate their situation.
Clear communication can reduce conflict. Taking the heat out of correspondence while still making your position understood often opens doors to resolution.
Professional presentation builds credibility. Whether dealing with solicitors, landlords, or courts, structured, professional documentation helps people take your case seriously.
Privacy and discretion are essential. All of this work has involved sensitive personal or commercial information that required complete confidentiality.
